What Exactly Does Collier County Have to Do With Any of This?

Dave Newton was the last candidate to enter the District 1 race. From the outside looking in, many expected Tom Shadrach to be the candidate to beat. Given the well-known political friction between Shadrach and Mayor John Gunter, Newton's late entry into the race naturally raises questions.

Coincidence? Strategic timing? Or is there a connection that hasn't been fully explained? We're following the trail wherever it leads.

Who Is Collier First?

Collier First is a Political Action Committee (PAC) based in Collier County that was formed in July 2024. The chair of the PAC is Lauren Maxwell, owner of Maxwell Mortgage Team. Even more interesting is her husband, Collier County Commissioner Daniel Kowal. Now guess who the largest donor to the Collier First PAC is? Commissioner Daniel Kowal. Limited government? Maybe in theory. Behind the scenes, it appears to be a different story.

Is their mission statement being updated to include Cape Coral? What is the purpose of this mailing, and what is the motivation behind it?

What Does This Have to Do With Cape Coral and Dave Newton?

Quite a bit.

Guess who paid for and distributed Dave Newton's recent campaign mailer? You guessed it, Collier First. The mailer didn't just promote Newton. It also told voters who they should support in several other races. That raises another question: Why is a Collier County PAC so heavily involved in influencing elections in Cape Coral?

Campaign Manager Questions

Now let's talk about campaign manager Mechelle Poling, who is managing Ray Mules campaign. Did you know that campaign managers conducting business in Cape Coral are required to obtain a Business Tax Receipt (BTR)! According to a Public Records Request submitted in June 2026, neither Mechelle Poling nor her business had a City of Cape Coral Business Tax Receipt on file at that time.

Mechelle Poling has reportedly been paid more than $8,000 to manage Ray Mule's campaign. However, MNP Marketing or I MNP Marketing does not appear to be registered on Sunbiz as a business entity or listed as a fictitious name.

Someone who publicly claims to run a clean campaign should also be making sure every applicable rule is being followed. Citizens we've spoken with have had very little positive to say about her campaign tactics and nothing positive to say about her personally. We also hope any campaign income or in-kind donations are being properly reported in accordance with state and federal law. We have also been informed that Mechelle Poling is allegedly related to Daniel Kowal and Lauren Maxwell through blood or marriage.

Anonymous Online Activity

We know Mechelle Poling enjoys engaging in online political battles from the shadows.

A few weeks ago, a Facebook profile using a nickname began commenting about Gunter campaign signs being damaged while attempting to imply involvement by the Chair of Take Out The Trash. That profile belonged to David Poling, Mechelle's husband.

However, multiple sources familiar with David and Mechelle have told us David does not engage in online political arguments, particularly after issues they reportedly experienced in Pennsylvania.

Based on those conversations and the timing of the posts, we believe Mechelle Poling was the individual operating David Poling's Facebook profile. If David Poling is willing to publicly state, in person, not anonymously online, that he personally made those comments, we will gladly issue both a retraction and a public apology to Mechelle Poling.

District 1... or District 6?

No, that's not a typo. That's AI doing what AI does.

When you're generating AI campaign graphics for a District 6 race and then create one for a District 1 race, AI sometimes assumes you made a typo and says, "Don't worry, I've got it."

The real question isn't whether AI made the error. The question is whether those AI design services are being properly reported as campaign expenditures or disclosed as in-kind contributions.

Campaign finance reports should help answer that question. The only remaining question is whether they will.
